The Last Generation

A PBS interactive documentary on the endangered future of the Marshall Islands

Released in 2018 by PBS Frontline and based on USGS research in the Republic of the Marshall Islands, this interactive documentary tells the story of Izerman, Julia and Wilmer, three children whose homeland could become uninhabitable within their lifetime. Nine-year-old Izerman describes the impact of climate change on his home in the Marshall Islands, a low-lying island nation home to more than 50,000 people — of whom about half  are under 18. The three Marshallese children share their hopes and fears as they grapple with the possibility of seeing their homeland disappear due to rising sea levels.
